What is Ginkgo Biloba Good For? Benefits for Brain Health and Memory

Ginkgo biloba is a living fossil. The ginkgo tree — Ginkgo biloba — has existed essentially unchanged for over 350 million years, surviving the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Individual trees can live for more than 1,000 years. Given that kind of longevity, it's perhaps not surprising that the plant has attracted intense interest for its potential cognitive benefits.

What Is Ginkgo Biloba?

Ginkgo biloba is the only living species in its plant division and is often called a "living fossil" by botanists. The fan-shaped leaves contain a unique collection of bioactive compounds — primarily flavone glycosides (including quercetin and kaempferol) and terpene lactones (ginkgolides and bilobalide). These compounds are not found in any other plant species.

Ginkgo leaf extract is one of the most widely studied herbal medicines in the world. It was among the first herbal supplements to undergo rigorous clinical trials, and it remains one of the top-selling herbal products in Europe and the United States.

What is Ginkgo Biloba Good For?

Memory and Cognitive Function

Ginkgo biloba's most well-known traditional and researched use is supporting memory and cognitive function. Researchers have proposed two primary mechanisms: improved circulation to the brain, and antioxidant protection of brain cells.

Ginkgo's terpene lactones — particularly ginkgolides — inhibit platelet-activating factor (PAF), which can impair blood flow, and have been shown to improve cerebral blood flow in multiple studies. Better blood flow to the brain means more oxygen and glucose delivery to neurons. Separately, ginkgo's flavonoids act as antioxidants that may protect brain cells from free radical damage.

Clinical research has been mixed but generally positive, with many studies showing improvements in memory, attention, and processing speed — particularly in older adults experiencing age-related cognitive decline.

Circulation Support

Beyond the brain, ginkgo has been studied for peripheral circulation — improving blood flow to the extremities. It's been used in European medicine for conditions involving poor circulation, including intermittent claudication (leg pain from reduced blood flow during walking).

Eye and Ear Health

Improved circulation extends to the eyes and inner ear. Some research suggests ginkgo may support visual field stability in glaucoma and reduce symptoms of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), likely through its circulatory effects, though results in individual studies vary.

Mood and Focus

Some studies have found that ginkgo supports mood and mental clarity, possibly through its effects on neurotransmitter systems including serotonin and dopamine. It may be particularly useful during periods of high cognitive demand — studying, complex work, or mental fatigue.

How to Take Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is typically standardized to contain 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones — the concentrations used in most clinical trials. However, whole-leaf extracts also have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine.

Our Liquid Ginkgo Biloba Extract is alcohol-free, non-GMO, and made in the USA — available in 1oz, 8oz, and 16oz. For a comprehensive brain support formula, also see our Formula B (Brain Support) Liquid Extract, which combines ginkgo with complementary botanical allies.

Is Ginkgo Biloba Safe?

Ginkgo biloba is well-tolerated by most people. It has a mild blood-thinning effect, so those taking anticoagulant medications (like warfarin or aspirin) should consult their healthcare provider before use. It should be discontinued before surgical procedures. Occasional side effects include headache, dizziness, or gastrointestinal upset.
